My 15 Favorite Images from 2016

Where to start. 2016 was an incredible year for me and my family to say the very least. For starters, we went to HELSINKI, FINLAND and AMSTERDAM. Um, that is a sentence I can honestly say I would never have imagined coming out of my mouth. (or in this case, my fingers, since I’m typing this post) My husband and I  welcomed our first child into the world, and let me tell you, he is an incredible little man. I just cannot get enough of him. I turned a quarter of a century old. And I became an auntie again.

On top of all of this wonderfulness, I had dozens of incredible clients who chose me to be their photographer. Have I mentioned how very lucky I am? I can’t tell you enough how humbling it is every time someone asks me to capture their special memories.

So, albeit a few days late, I wanted to share my 15 favorite images from 2016 and just what makes them so very special to me.

In the spring, my brother-in-law proposed to his girlfriend of TEN YEARS (finally, right!?) and she had absolutely no idea whatsoever that it was coming. As he proposed in front of her family and some close friends, I was lucky enough to be there to capture some images of the very special, incredibly unexpected moment. I think her facial expression in this photo says it all.

Hours after giving birth, my family members came to the hospital to meet our new little bundle of joy. From my hospital bed, still in a complete daze from the preceding events, I snapped this photo of the very first time my mom got to hold her grandson. She was so excited, and the look on her face says it all: Love at first site.

It wouldn’t be right if at least a few of my favorite images from 2016 didn’t include my new baby boy, right? This photo was again taken from my hospital bed less than 24 hours after giving birth. Looking at the complete love and adoration my husband had for his little guy from the first second we met him still makes me teary-eyed.

One of my best friends for more than a decade has been this incredible woman. She is one of the most kind, caring and dedicated people I know. This summer it was time for her to say goodbye to her other best friend, Stanley, a 14-year-old yorkie-poo who had been battling with various ailments. On his last night, we took these photos at the beach. He ran the whole shoot and had an absolute blast. It was so rewarding to get to spend these special moments with both of them.

The way the waves were receding back into Lake Superior in the background of this shot is still incredible to me. We shot this image right at the mouth of a large river, and the patterns the water were making are some of the coolest ones I’ve ever seen! (and I grew up by lakes, so that’s saying a lot!)

This. Face. Need I say more? This little girl was just way too cute to handle, and I still can’t get enough of this portrait.

Two words: Sun flare. I love sun flare, especially when it helps tell the story of an image. Here, we were on the pier on a gorgeous late November morning. One of those mornings that should’ve been 10 degrees or so outside, but instead it was mid-40s and absolutely perfect.

I am the first one to admit I sometimes struggle with getting some of my photos tack-sharp. I love this image because it is one of the sharpest photos I got in all of 2016. Plus, it’s of my puppy on a gorgeous beach day, so I might be a little biased…

I believe the details in life are what make everything so special. I loved getting some macro shots of this adorable newborn in his nursery, and this is one of my favorites from the day. I was peeking my lens through the slats of his crib and the lighting was just right to capture this creamy, dreamy photo of this little guy.

Derrick and Ashley had a beautiful oak tree in their front yard, so after we finished off some shots of their new little bundle of joy inside, we headed out to get a few more. I love this one because I actually pulled a branch slightly in front of my lens to achieve the look of peeking through the tree at them. The out-of-focus leaves in the foreground add so much depth to this image in my opinion, and it’s something I definitely want to experiment more with in 2017.

Even though this cutie’s hand is hiding in her sleeve, I just can’t get enough of the true laughter and smiles on daddy and daughter’s faces. As a parent, I know that the sound of your kid laughing is easily the best one in the world, so I know how truly happy they both were at this moment.

Like I asked above, what kind of mom would I be if a few of my favs from the year weren’t of my own kiddo? Even though the focus is a little off in this shot, I just love the memories that it brings back. On our first ever road trip with the little guy, we headed up to Copper Harbor, Michigan. It was a bit chillier than we would have liked, so our man hung out in daddy’s coat for a good portion of the day. It’s hard to believe that he would be way too big to do this now…

You might be noticing a trend, but beaches and dogs are my weaknesses. I love this photo because the lighting was perfect, and so was this pup. These two cuties were moving out of the area the week after I did their shoot, and I felt really lucky to get to take their last photos in Marquette.

I love this one because it’s of people I love: My parents. These two have been married for 31 years and are the best role models I could ask for when looking at who a parent, grandparent and partner should be to one another. They don’t often take pictures together, so I was super excited when I got to take this one for them.

Last but certainly not least is my all-time favorite image of 2016. Me, my husband, and our little boy. Even though I didn’t technically take this photo (I handed my camera off to my sister for this shot), it still makes the list of my favorites from the year because it’s just that special.

Well friends, that’s it. Thanks for sticking around with me and checking out the photos I loved from this past year. I’m certain 2017 will be filled with even more great images that I will be elated to share with you. Happy New Year!
